Join a community group
A great way to make new friends is by joining a local community group. Look for groups centered around parenting or something you enjoy doing. By joining a group focused on an activity you enjoy, such as hiking or gardening or a church Bible study, you can make new friends while doing something you love. It's a great way to bond with others over shared interests.Attend events
Another great way to meet new people is by attending events in your area. Check out local events calendars to see what is happening nearby. Attend events focused on parenting or family-friendly activities to connect with other parents. You may also consider attending events related to your hobbies or interests. You never know who you may meet!Depending on the time of year, many local churches and family-friendly gyms have Easter Egg Hunts, Fall Festivals, Pumpkin Patches, Trunk or Treats so I always start there while looking for something local and kid-friendly.
Facebook Events is the next stop on my planning list! Facebook curates events in your feed based on proximity and interests (gauged by the platform). Even if you don't want to mark yourself as "Going," you can mark yourself as "Interested" to help Facebook suggest similar events for you in the future.
And always always always check out your Public Library! The new Round Rock Public Library is designed for families - the entire second floor has classrooms, a play area, an outdoor area, and of course books and movies exclusively for kids and families to enjoy. Check out the library calendar to make sure you aren't missing any of their awesome programs, like Toddler Time, Family Storytime, or Reading Programs.
Ask for advice
One of the simplest icebreakers that can connect you with other parents is asking for advice. Whether you are new to the area or have been there for a while, asking for recommendations for the best pediatrician (we love Dr. Chang at Treehouse Pediatrics!) or school in the area can lead to a great conversation. Even if you may not need the advice, it can be a great way to start a conversation with other parents.Attend playdates
Playdates can be a great way to bond with other parents. If your child attends daycare or preschool, ask if the parents would like to set up a playdate. You can also connect with other parents through your child's extracurricular activities. Attending playdates is valuable not only for your child but also for you to make new friends with other parents.Start a conversation
Sometimes, all it takes to break the ice and make new friends is starting a conversation. Don't be afraid to introduce yourself and strike up a conversation with other parents while at one of Round Rock's many parks or attending a school event. It may feel a bit awkward at first, but be confident and genuine, and you will be sure to make new friends in no time.Making new friends as a parent in a new place can be daunting, but with the right mindset and some simple icebreakers, you can find new friends in no time. By joining groups or attending events, asking for advice, attending playdates, and starting conversations, you can build new relationships with other parents in your area. So, be confident and put yourself out there, and find your new group of parent friends!
